Russian Karelia eyeing green choices | |
Stakeholders from the Republic of Karelia in Russia have shown strong interest in adopting sustainable public procurement following a conference on the topic with UNEP represented.
The event was organised by the Russian Cleaner Production and Sustainable Development Centre with support from the Swedish Ministry of the Environment and Energy and the Centre of Environmental Initiatives ‘EcoSpace’ non-governmental organisation.
Participants were briefed on work on sustainable public procurement under the 10-Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production (10YFP), its legal basis, criteria and methodologies and other topics.
Stakeholders also signalled a real interest in environmental awareness-raising activities at the event, which was held in Petrozavodsk, Karelia on 1 December.
10YFP is included in the approved UNEP-Russia work plan and strategy for 2015-2021, while growing demand for sustainable tourism, procurement and sustainable consumption and production practices exists in the country.

The United Nations Environment Assembly will meet for the second time on 23-27 May in Nairobi. There, participants will set out their vision for how UNEP can deliver the environmental dimension of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). A high-level segment will bring together ministers for a multi-stakeholder dialogue, where concrete tools for achieving the SDGs will be explored under the theme ‘Healthy Environment – Healthy People’. Civil society will also be represented at the Assembly and can already take part in the conversation through the My UNEA platform. The event will be preceded by the Global Major Groups and Stakeholders Forum in the Kenyan capital on 21-22 May. The following month, Environment Ministers from across the pan-European region will gather in the Georgian city of Batumi on 6-10 June to plan measures to fight air pollution and ensure the transition to a Green Economy. The meeting, known as the Eighth ‘Environment for Europe’ conference, will be led by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe with support - including side events - provided by UNEP.
