Building a sustainable financial system | |
UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner will be among high level panellists exploring what role the EU could play in creating conditions for sustainable finance at an event in Brussels this month. During the event, titled ‘Building a sustainable financial system – the role of the EU,’ Mr Steiner will present key findings from the UNEP Inquiry on the Design of a Sustainable Financial System. The Executive Director will also launch a discussion paper placing key outcomes of the Inquiry’s final report in the European context. The paper will feed into the European Commission’s public consultation on long-term and sustainable investment, which aims to assess the state of play in the EU. The panel will focus on the role of financing in sustainable development in the context of the Commission’s recent proposals for a Circular Economy and for Capital Markets Union. Frans Timmermans, First Vice President of the European Commission, is among other speakers at the event, which takes place on 22 March at 13.00 – 15.00 in the European Parliament. The discussion forms part of a series of similar high level panel discussions under the ‘2016 - Year of Green Finance,’ led by UNEP’s Inquiry initiative in close partnership with GLOBE EU and the European Commission.
