State of mountainous environments assessed for COP21 | |
UNEP has held five meetings assessing climate change and adaptation for mountainous regions, with results due to feed into outlook reports to be presented at the COP21 climate talks.
The reports will document existing climate policy responses, identify best practices and adaptation gaps and present recommendations for concrete actions, with the aim of triggering policy changes and providing consolidated information on the state of mountain environments.
Up until the end of September, consultation meetings to review and validate the main conclusions of the reports were held in Budva, Montenegro; Almaty, Kazakhstan; the Peruvian capital Lima, the city of Entebbe in Uganda and the Georgian capital Tbilisi covering the Western Balkans/Dinaric Arc, Central Asian, Andean, East African and South Caucasus mountainous sub-regions respectively. The meetings took place as part of the ‘Climate Change Action In Developing Countries With Fragile Mountainous Ecosystems From A Sub-regional Perspective’ project led by UNEP.
Findings from the outlook reports will be presented in Paris during a high-level side event to December’s climate negotiations on International Mountain Day – 11 December.
