17  UNEP ON THE GROUND
Moscow ‘forest valley’ opens in style

An environmental event has been held with children in costume at three branches of Moscow Lyceum 1586 to mark the opening of a ‘Forest Valley’.

All three international kindergarten branches actively took part in a cooperation programme on environmental education for schools and kindergartens in the Russian capital’s ‘Ramenki’ municipal district on 30 June.

The participating children had already created a fruit garden and apothecary garden at their schools under the programme. For the ‘Forest Valley,’ UNEP’s Moscow office arranged for the purchase of seedlings of various trees and plants. After the ceremony whereby thuya trees, strawberries, flowers and junipers were planted with the children, their teachers, the administration and UNEP, a brief narrative was provided on each of the planted flora species, their individual characteristics and how they should be handled.

The children then enjoyed an environmental quiz, played games, danced and just had fun.

The event was organised by UNEP’s Moscow office together with the A.N. Belozersky Institute of Physico-Chemical Biology.
