Experts tackle mountain adaptation to climate change | |
Government experts from Western Balkan and Dinaric Arc countries have gathered together with other international experts in Budva, Montenegro to discuss priorities and challenges related to climate change and adaptation in mountainous ecosystems.
During the regional consultation meeting, which was held in Budva from 6 to 8 July, the experts reviewed the main findings and conclusions of a new regional report titled ‘Outlook on Adaptation Responses to Climate Change in the Western Balkans.’ The paper will be released at the forthcoming COP21 UNFCCC in Paris and is timed to coincide with celebration of International Mountain Day on 11 December.
UNEP is currently conducting a series of regional consultation meetings on climate change and adaptation in mountain regions, as part of the inter-regional, UNEP-led project titled ‘Climate change action in developing countries with fragile mountainous ecosystems from a sub-regional perspective’.
The project seeks to promote greater sub-regional understanding and foster joint dialogue on climate change and adaptation in five sub-regions dominated by mountain ecosystems, such as the (Tropical) Andes, Western Balkans/Dinaric Arc, Central Asia, East Africa and the South Caucasus. The project will also facilitate further inter-regional exchange of knowledge and experience regarding adaptation in mountain regions at global level, such as in the context of the UNFCCC.
