UNEP ON THE GROUND |
Haiti’s first micro-grid inaugurated | |
On 1 June, UNEP’s partners EarthSpark International and Enèji Pwop inaugurated the country’s first renewable energy micro-grid, which will provide 430 households and shops in the commune of Les Anglais with an affordable, reliable and environmentally sensitive electricity service. The automatic hybrid system includes around 90kW of solar panels, 4000 kWh of battery capacity and an emergency diesel generator. The micro-grid uses second generation smart meters and pairs residential and commercial loads in order to manage demand on a town-sized scale, making the whole grid more efficient. Once proven effective in Les Anglais, this integrated town-scale approach can be replicated in other locations and, as a proven business model, will be increasingly attractive to investors. UNEP’s work on sustainable energy in Haiti is primarily funded by the government of Norway.
