Lead poisoning prevention week
A host of global events will between 25 and 31 October 2015 address the lack of awareness on the health risks of lead in paint and highlight efforts to eliminate it. Childhood lead exposure is estimated to contribute to about 600 000 new cases of children with intellectual disabilities every year. Despite this, lead paint is still widely available in many countries for decorating homes and can be found in schools and hospitals, toys and jewelry. Actions organised by community groups, public health departments, academia, government departments and others include an art competition, a workshop on preventing exposure to the paint and blood tests. The Global Alliance to Eliminate Lead Paint is a voluntary alliance of stakeholders lead by UNEP and the World Health Organisation which aims to eliminate lead paint by 2020. The UN bodies support national efforts to regulate lead paints, inform the public of their exposure and encourage manufacturers to eliminate lead from their products. Marine litter MOOC to kick off
Those wishing to enhance their knowledge of marine litter issues have the opportunity to take part in a web-based course organised free of charge by UNEP in cooperation with the Open University of the Netherlands. A Massive Online Open Course (MOOC) presenting practical options for fighting marine litter in local contexts will be held between 26 October and 20 December and is aimed at activists, policymakers, researchers and others. In 2010 alone, an estimated eight million metric tonnes of plastic entered the oceans, threatening marine life and even ending up in human food. The waste is broken down into smaller pieces by sunlight, oxidation and waves, amplifying the problem. UNEP’s 2014 Champion of the Earth prize was awarded to Boyan Slat, who at the age of just 19 founded the Ocean Clean Up initiative with the aim of using natural currents to clear up the plastic. In order to sign up for the course, please click here. |
